First successful kickflip in surfing

While skateboarding was called “sidewalk surfing” in its early days, it’s the one influencing its big bro now. Since November 7, 2007, Volcom has offered $10,000 and a two-page spread in Transworld Surf to the first person to pull off a kickflip on a surfboard. Well, the competition has ended. Zoltan “The Magician” Torkos has brought sidewalk move to the waves. Check it out in slow-mo.

Like many action sports history-making maneuvers, there was a little bit of controversy. The Volcom contest contained very specific rules. When you’re not watching the slow-mo, it’s hard to tell whether Zoltan abided by rule #3 – “the kickflip must be a real air above the lip'”, as in over the wave. Eventually Volcom decided to award him for successfully pulling off the dangerous trick yet they created a second contest that would award twice as much money for the first “above and off the lip kickflip”.

Congratulations to Zoltan for scoring ten grand, reaching 545,890 views on Youtube, appearing on the front page of Yahoo! (with the slightly redundant headline, “Surfer pulls off kickflip trick”), and making surf history.
