Can’t forget the wildcat – an addendum to the last Science Lesson

I was watching the Winter X Games Snowboard Slopestyle qualifiers, and I realized that I goofed on my last post about double backflips not being a thing. They are if you’re Mark McMorris.

Now a wildcat isn’t your ordinary backflip. You stay perpendicular to the face of the mountain instead of turning your body 90 degrees. The beginning of this video shows the difference:

It may not seem like much to the untrained eye, but the math matters.

Nevertheless, I still stand by my point that you’re not going to be seeing a lot of double flips, regular or wildcat. Not many guys do them, which is why they’ve become a signature trick for Mark. At the same time, I’ve always viewed it as a transition into his triple cork. They do add some points for style so I’ll give it to him.
